If you have attended a public event in Canada in the last 5 or so years, you have very likely heard a land acknowledgement. In concept these acknowledgments are a recognition of the various peoples who occupied these lands prior to the arrival of settlers over the last several hundred years, in practice many argue that they are little more than politicized virtue signaling and should be done away with.
First Nation’s stories are a pivotal part of Canada’s history, whether that be long before most of our ancestors arrived in this country, or in more recent times including their invaluable and valiant efforts fighting for Canada in 1812, 1945 and beyond. Denying or forgetting that history would be a mistake.
Where many draw a line is with the anachron in istic, or outright dishonest, politicization of history.
Many also oppose land acknowledgments because they feel superficial. They seem precisely like the type of thing made up by progressive white people to assuage their own guilt with meaningless virtue signaling instead of doing something helpful, like providing clean drinking water to all First Nations communities in Canada.
The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms recently issued a legal warning letter to Ontario’s Hamilton-Wentworth district schoolboard after they “paused” elected school councilor Catherine Kronas’ participation on school council when she dared to respectfully request that her opposition to the practice of land acknowledgements at their gathering be noted in the meetings minutes. The board alleges that this polite opposition constituted a code of conduct breech, despite insisting that they respect diverse opinions.
To discuss that case, the history and legality surrounding land acknowledgements, and to dissect how they have seemingly become the latest thing that no one is allowed to question, Adam was joined by the President of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, John Carpay.
